Is it crossing the (a) line?

Some days I feel like I'm ill-equipped to make a documentary.

Let me explain.

I come from a TV background and for better or worse, my mind thinks "audience" before "creator's vision", "saleability" over "artistic innovation", "needs of the broadcaster" before....well, you get the idea.

My experience makes it ridiculously challenging some days to turn off the "TV" in me and unleash the uninhibited creative juices....

Case in point: I've made it my mission to cover as many angles to this film as possible. What are the many facets of our society and culture that have responded to the "Booty Trend"? Even if some of them may be questionable content to certain audiences. As an investigator, I really should look at every angle before I come to my conclusion, right?

So, we have hip-hop, or more politically correct "urban music" (which in itself is proving to be challenging as it is more of a 'closed to outsiders' industry than I ever might have anticipated), the fashion world and uber-engineered designer jeans, celebrities and their famous curves...(I've skipped a few -- girl's gotta maintain a certain air of mystery )...but what about...

Porn?

Yes, Porn. The booty used to be entirely taboo. There is a huge industry that's always profited from and carved a niche out of booty worship. I find it fascinating, but honestly, I tread gingerly. How do you address booty fetish porn without addressing "back door action"? Do you? Can you?

I don't consider myself to be highly liberal and free-thinking, but I'm not so close-minded that I would avoid an entire industry that celebrates the booty it its own way.

If I had the capability to do so, I would perform an analysis on the number of bent- over-knickers-down-thong-riding-high-low-angle booty shots plastered all over MySpace. It's like nothing I've ever seen before. You don't see NEARLY as many women shoving their breasts into the camera or showing off bare boobies. What does this MEAN? Are butts safer to display because they bring us back to childhood memories of giggling-n-mooning our friends? Are they a great way for a woman to show without words that she's naughty (reminiscent of bending over as a child for an old-school spankin from a parent?) Or is it entirely the opposite? Are women showing the booty because it's as vulgar and explicit as they can be without showing their other genitalia?

I don't have the answer. But if I wanted to join every "Biggest Bootays in the USA" club, adding myself as a member would probably take me several days.....

As an investigator, I have to explore all the options.

I make a few calls, targeting more tasteful porn companies (read; ones run by well-dressed women, please forgive me the bias)... I've received a lead to one of the pioneers of the Booty Fetish Film scene. I realize this might be my ticket in. But do I want to go here? I'm undecided.

I'm going to sit on this one (can't stop punning) and see what wisdom time (or comments on this blog) brings.
